ISO 14000 The International Organization of Standardization, (ISO) is a worldwide organization that develops many different kinds of Standards. ISO 14000 is a series of documents relating to the implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS). ISO 14001 is the document which defines the requirements for the EMS and provides guidance for its use.

Canadian Standards Association The Canadian Standards Association is a not-for-profit membership-based association serving business, industry, government and consumers in Canada and the global marketplace. ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.

BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Retail A new version of BREEAM has been launched to provide the construction industry with a method of improving the environmental performance of retail buildings. With more than 322,000 outlets, and employing around one in nine of the total workforce, the UK retail sector can make a real contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and other environmental impacts.

ASHRAE The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers advances technology to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world. Membership is open to any person associated with the field.

Global Reporting Initiative A multi-stakeholder governed institution collaborating to provide the global standards in sustainability reporting.

The Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) is a non-profit association of third-party, environmental performance recognition, certification and labelling organizations founded in 1994 to improve, promote, and develop the "ecolabelling" of products and services.

GreenSpec The online GreenSpec® Product Guide lists over 2,200 environmentally preferable products selected by editors at BuildingGreen, Inc.. The guide includes key insight on the green attributes of each product and the most critical green issues for each product category. Editors at BuildingGreen conduct their own independent research in assessing manufacturer claims, ensuring that the directory contains unbiased, quality information. GreenSpec does not charge for listings or sell ads. GreenSpec product listings are accessed on BuildingGreen.com with a subscription to BuildingGreen Suite.

Eco Index The Eco Index is a ground-breaking environmental assessment tool designed to advance sustainability practices within the outdoor industry. It provides companies throughout the supply chain a way to benchmark and measure their environmental footprint, allowing them to identify areas for improvement and make informed sourcing and product life cycle decisions.

Green Seal Green Seal develops life cycle-based sustainability standards for products, services and companies and offer third-party certification for those that meet the criteria in the standard. Green Seal has been actively identifying and promoting sustainability in the marketplace, and helping organizations be greener in a real and effective way since 1989.

EcoLogo Founded in 1988 by the Government of Canada but now recognized world-wide, EcoLogoTM is North America's largest environmental standard and certification mark. EcoLogo provides customers - public, corporate and consumer - with assurance that the products and services bearing the logo meet stringent standards of environmental leadership. With THOUSANDS of EcoLogo Certified products, EcoLogo certifies environmental leaders covering a large variety of categories, helping you find and trust the world's most sustainable products. The EcoLogo Program is one of two such programs in North America that has been successfully audited by the Global EcoLabelling Network (GEN) as meeting ISO 14024 standards for eco-labelling.

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) FSC is an international certification and labeling system dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world's forests. This means that forests are evaluated to meet FSC's strict environmental and social standards. Fibre from certified forests is then tracked all the way to the consumer through the FSC Chain of Custody system.  FSC certified wood, paper and other forest products are then sold with the FSC logo by certified companies in the marketplace.

So-Called Compostable Utensils Diverted to Landfill

CBS San Francisco reports here that so called compostable utensils are often filtered out from other compost materials and are instead being diverted to landfill. Furthermore, it is noted that commercial composters would rather not have to deal with them in the first place.
